Cost of Living in the Miami Valley

How affordable is the Miami Valley? This page tracks the everyday costs that decide it: what a median-priced home’s mortgage payment takes of a typical income, what electricity, natural gas, gasoline and groceries cost, and how they add up. Each figure updates on its own as new numbers come in, from public sources, and links to its full history, chart, methodology and data.

Bookmark this page. It tracks how affordable the Miami Valley is, updated as new numbers come in: utility rates, gas, groceries and housing. On a computer, press Ctrl+D (⌘+D on a Mac); on a phone, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen or Bookmark.

About these numbers

Utility rates are the supply rates on the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio’s Energy Choice Ohio charts for AES Ohio and the former CenterPoint Energy Ohio territory; gas prices are the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Midwest average; grocery prices are Bureau of Labor Statistics U.S. averages; the mortgage payment uses our MLS sale prices, Freddie Mac rates and Census income estimates. Regional and national figures are labeled as such. Each page explains exactly how its number is built.
