About this data

Three monthly costs added together and divided by Montgomery County’s median household income (Census Bureau Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates; the latest year carries forward until the next is published): principal and interest on a median-priced home with 20% down (our mortgage payment share page), the energy supply cost of a home using 1,000 kWh of electricity and 70 Ccf of natural gas at the default rates, and 40 gallons of regular gasoline at the Midwest average price (about 12,000 miles a year at 25 miles per gallon). For each month, the most recent available figure of each input is used. Property taxes, insurance, utility delivery charges, food and everything else a household spends on are not included, so this understates total costs; it is meant to show how these three move together.
