About this data

Zillow’s Observed Rent Index measures typical asking rents for single-family homes, condos and apartments listed for rent, adjusted so it reflects the same mix of homes over time, and smoothed. It tracks what new tenants are asked to pay, which moves ahead of what existing tenants pay on their current leases; the Census Bureau’s survey of all rents runs lower. The Dayton metro area is the Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek metropolitan area (Montgomery, Greene and Miami counties). City figures cover only the cities Zillow has enough listings for, and start in different years.
