About this data

Foreclosure cases filed in each county’s Court of Common Pleas (general division) in the past 12 months, per 1,000 owner-occupied homes. Filings are each judge’s monthly count of new foreclosure cases, from the caseload reports every Ohio court files with the Supreme Court of Ohio (its eStats public report), added across the court’s judges; they include mortgage foreclosures and the tax foreclosures county treasurers file. Ohio adds every county’s Common Pleas court, from 2015. The courts list today’s judgeships, so the figures start in 2011, when they cover the courts as they are now. Owner-occupied homes are the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 5-year estimates (table B25003) for the same year, or the latest released. Every report is checked before it’s used (the right court, the right months, and the form’s own totals add up); a month that fails a check is left out until it’s corrected. These are filings, not completed foreclosures: many cases end in a dismissal, a loan modification or a sale before a sheriff’s sale. The courts report counts only, never cases, so no homeowner or lender is ever identified.
