About this data

From the public Home Mortgage Disclosure Act records lenders file with federal regulators: mortgages actually made (originated) to buy a home, first liens on a home the borrower will live in, leaving out reverse mortgages and business loans. The share is of borrowers whose age was reported, by the age of the primary applicant in HMDA's brackets (under 25, 25 to 34 and so on); many loans also have a co-applicant, whose age isn't counted here. This is the age of home-purchase borrowers, not of first-time buyers: cash purchases aren't in HMDA, and repeat buyers are. The Dayton metro is the sum of Montgomery, Greene and Miami counties. A county year with fewer than 100 loans isn't shown. The U.S., state and other metro figures are tallied the same way from every state's HMDA file for the same year; metro areas are the Census Bureau's 2023 metropolitan statistical areas, built from their counties.
