About these numbers

A taxing district is one combination of county, city, village or township and school district; Ohio has 4,479 of them, and every home is in exactly one. The state's estimate applies each district's effective residential rate to a $100,000 home's taxable value (35% of market value) and subtracts the 10% and 2.5% rollbacks on qualifying levies; for other home values the map scales it, since the tax is proportional to value. It leaves out special assessments, the homestead exemption and the newer school-floor credit. Because it uses the same home value everywhere, it compares tax rates, not actual bills: homes in a high-rate district may be worth less, or more. A county's median district is the middle one among its districts, not weighted by how many homes each has. Regions are Dayton Report's geographic groupings.
