Kettering Board of Education, Nov. 3: 5-0 vote approves Van Buren Middle School hazardous material abatement contract

Posted on November 5, 2026November 5, 2026 by Dayton Report

Written with the help of AI from the Kettering Board of Education minutes, Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

What the board approved

This recap is based on the approved minutes of the Kettering City School District Board of Education work session held Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, at the Board office, 500 Lincoln Park Blvd. All five members were present, and the meeting was called to order at 6:01 p.m.

The board’s only action on district business was Motion 136-26, which approved the Business Services agenda item as presented. That item was a recommendation to approve a contract with Peterson Construction, identified as GMP VB01, for the hazardous material abatement of Van Buren Middle School. Abatement means removing or neutralizing hazardous materials from a building. GMP generally refers to a guaranteed maximum price, though the minutes do not define the term or list a dollar amount for the contract.

Mrs. Richards moved and Mr. Lautar seconded. The roll call vote was five ayes (Mr. Lautar, Mrs. Richards, Mr. Martin, Mrs. Kane and Mr. Henderson) and no nays, and the president declared the motion carried.

Facilities and district updates

Business Director Jeff Johnson updated the board on site plans for Van Buren, including fencing and items required by the City of Kettering. He also discussed an update on the turf for the Rousch stadium field. The minutes do not record costs or timelines for either project.

Nicole Will, principal of the CTC, presented with student ambassadors on the CTC’s 5-star report card and on expanding cross-program collaboration. The students introduced themselves and described their experiences at the CTC.

Food and Nutrition Services Director MaryLynne Beirmann reported on three focus areas: getting students involved, the merging of the middle schools, and honoring staff. She said the department is self-sufficient and takes in no money from the general fund, and noted the department received an award in May for its efforts to get students involved.

Victor Jones, the district’s workforce development and career navigator, described his work connecting students with careers and employers, and helping students find their strengths.

Board discussion and public comment

The minutes record no public comment at this meeting.

During board discussion, Mr. Lautar spoke about the most recent community forum and praised the students who attended and spoke. Mrs. Kane also noted the importance of student input at the forum and thanked the students for attending.

Executive session and routine items

In Motion 137-26, the board voted 5-0 to enter executive session, a closed-door portion of a meeting, for three stated purposes: consideration of compensation of a public employee or official; consideration of purchasing property for public purposes, or selling unneeded or unfit property at competitive bidding, if early disclosure would give an unfair advantage to someone with an adverse private interest; and discussing matters required to be kept confidential by state or federal law. The board went into executive session at 7:17 p.m. and came out at 8:58 p.m. The minutes record no action taken afterward on those topics.

The board opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and adjourned at 8:59 p.m. on a 5-0 vote (Motion 138-26).
