Updated daily from public agendas, our new-business stories and the Census Bureau’s building permits.
Since we began tracking (Nov 4, 2026), the boards in the Miami Valley’s cities and townships took up 4 zoning and planning cases we wrote about. Since we began tracking (Nov 4, 2026), 1 more announced it’s coming. The 24 cities and villages that report building permits to the Census Bureau every month, with the four counties’ unincorporated areas, permitted 1,127 new homes from January through September 2026.
About the data
- Zoning and planning cases come from the agendas of the planning commissions, zoning boards and landmarks boards we read in each city and township. Each links to our story, which says what’s proposed and when the board meets, so you can weigh in, for or against. A case is placed from its address with the U.S. Census Bureau’s geocoder; one whose address can’t be matched is in the list but not on the map.
- New businesses are the restaurants, bars and shops we’ve confirmed as Now Open or Coming Soon from the business’s own site or an official record. They’re counted on their city, since a business’s exact spot isn’t always public before it opens.
- New homes are housing units in the building permits each city, village and township reports to the Census Bureau’s monthly Building Permits Survey, January through September 2026. A house counts one unit, an apartment building every unit; not every permitted home gets built. Places that report only once a year are hatched.
- Commercial property sales aren’t included yet; there’s no official source we can read automatically.
