About this data
From the Census Bureau’s Business Formation Statistics, which count applications for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) filed with the IRS, by the county of the business’s address. An application is a signal of intent to start a business, not a count of businesses that open or hire; the Census Bureau publishes county figures once a year, about six months after the year ends. The Miami Valley figure is the sum of Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Warren, Butler, Clark, Preble and Darke counties. Ohio’s Secretary of State also publishes new filings, but its files can’t be read automatically, so they aren’t used here.
