The City of Kettering said it plans to remove traffic signals at two intersections that served Van Buren Middle School, citing the school’s demolition and the results of a traffic signal warrant study.
According to the city, a warrant study is required when Kettering seeks funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation to replace an aging signal. Both the city’s own analysis and a review by an independent third-party consultant concluded that neither intersection meets the criteria to warrant a traffic signal.
The city said the signals have a few more years of useful life, but their main purpose was to serve the middle school’s operations and school zone. With the school being demolished, Kettering said the two intersections serve little purpose and the signals can add unnecessary delay and potentially cause accidents.
Kettering also said a 150-day analysis period will allow it to monitor whether removing the signals creates undue safety issues. The city said the result of that study may be to keep the signals in their current state.
